Storm is a four-year-old bearded collie and has lived with me for about three and half years. He started alerting me to my asthma attacks a few months after he came home with me. After some events that transpired this week I've decided that I would indeed benefit from having him with me as a Respiratory Alert Dog during my rough spots. His vest will get here next week.
The other day I was taking a video of my new nebulizer for my mother and wound up capturing a good portion of Storm's alert behaviors. I know that it looks like a bunch of random behavior out of context, but this is what he does whenever I am significantly asthmatic. He knows the difference between being a little wheezy and a bad attack. The camera throws him off a bit, but you can see him at alert by the couch, in my face when he comes up, and lay heavily on me while I take my meds.
Also, I look gross and tired because I was in the emergency room about 5 hours earlier recovering from anaphylactic shock. Bleah.
I have a question! How did you teach him to alert you and how did you get the vest for him? I have bad asthma and anxiety and would love to train my own dog and get him/her a vest since I dont have the money to go through an organization. Any advice would be much appreciated! :)
