Everyone who has ever heard this woman sing for the first time always asks, "Why have I never heard of her before?" or "Why isn't her name as well-known as Sassy's or Ella's?". I prefer to concentrate on what prompted the question rather than deal with the answer. Teri Thornton was, to just about every learned critic or casual listener, the vocal equivalent to Ella and Sarah. She had the kind of pipes that took a back seat to no one. I have been searching for more recorded work of hers and, sadly, I've only been able to find 3 albums. This is one of my favorites from her but, to tell the truth, I love them all equally. Here is an all too brief sample of Ms. Thornton's swingin' way with a well known standard. Compare it to any other version of this song sung by anyone and you'll admit that she holds up well with the best of 'em.
Lineup:
Teri Thornton - vocals
Norman Simmons - piano
Lonnie Plaxico - bass
Grady Tate - drums
