Amanda from the University of Tulsa showed us their Challenge X vehicle. They are taking several different strategies to meet competition's demands of greater fuel economy and lower emissions:

Hybrid Engine approach
Bio Diesel Engine (80% petroleum diesel, 20% natural(bio) products)
Electric Engine powered by hydrogen fuel cells
Regenerative braking to re-charge the fuel cells.
The ECUs of each of these systems are were left intact but integrated using LabVIEW running on the CompactRIO platform.

My apologies for fumbling the mic....good recovery by Amanda though! :-)
