Hmmm, Zhang Yimou, Beijing Olympics, Taiji ... and you are wondering why this commercial looks so familiar?

That's because most white people do not do Shaolin. I'm sure if they did, they would use white people.

Chinese culture is not a minority culture. This ain't elivis playing rock and roll. They are chinese people doing a chinese art. If you think there is some western egocirtism by having the one person that stands out be a white girl among 1000 uniformed chinese. I understand. Hell, the opening of the Beijing oylpics made a lot people fell uneasy. But it made a lot others feel proud. But to call this "CLASSIC culture appropriation" is gross misuse of the term. Read what it actually means.

And how in the world is this ad racist?

Actually, that's an art and it's called Shaolin. It's an ad. Not racism. If it was an ad to air in china, the girl in the middle would be Chinese. Besides, the guys around her could have been white if any western countries practiced the shoalin arts. But they don't. So by default, they HAVE to be Chinese. Really, just look at how many Chinese are working on the actual commercial. The people behind this aren't racist. It may seem like it to you, cause you are unfamiliar with Shaolin.

Ninety five percent of the viewers of this advertisement would, too, be unfamiliar with shaolin.

This is CLASSIC cultural appropriation, end of story.

An amazing feat. Before I watched this Making Of... I thought they'd used CGI to replicate all the dancers, like was done for the Oompa-Loompas in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I KNOW, RIGHT?! The right car campaign can bring me to tears. We built excitement, indeed!

Sometimes I think advertising is more important than any other art form. Maybe even more important than medicine since that only helps us when we're sick, while advertising tells us what to do ALL THE TIME. Way more important! What would you rather have, a pro-active branding paradigm or a digitized fluorescein angiogram? PSH, NO CONTEST.

I hope aliens see our advertising first.
