《色，戒》是根据张爱玲完成于1950年的同名小说改编。这万余字的短篇小说中，描述的是抗战时期，女大学生王佳芝欲施美人计，刺杀汪精卫身边的大红人易先生。当佳芝成功勾引易先生准备下手时，却发现自己对他动了真情，佳芝通风报信让易先生逃过一劫后，易先生却决定要赶尽杀绝。
一九三八年，中国正值多事之秋。
一群爱国青年在香港组成话剧团，为国家募款抗战。剧团团长邝裕民(王力宏饰)对汪精卫等一众汉奸极为愤恨，当他得知汪手下的一个特务头目易先生(梁朝伟饰)身在香港，决定伙同团员，展开暗杀行动。易先生机警精明，等闲之辈难以接近，唯一缺点是好女色；团员决定以美人计对付易先生：由剧团台柱王佳芝(汤唯饰)假扮香港贵妇，先与易太太混熟，继而藉机色诱易先生，从中制造暗杀机会。王佳芝凭着美色与演技，成功吸引易先生的注意。易先生首次与王佳芝单独约会后，即亦步亦趋地跟着王佳芝回家，而团员亦早已在屋内持枪待命；可惜到最后关头，易先生没有入屋，暗杀行动功亏一篑。
团员认为王佳芝缺乏男女经验，有碍色诱行动，王佳芝不惜牺牲自己，与剧团中唯一有男女经验的团员梁润生发生关系。此举不但断送她和邝裕民之间的一份幽微感情，更意想不到的是，易先生突然接获任命，须撤离香港，暗杀行动遂宣告失败。
两年后，香港沦陷，王佳芝迁往上海，重遇邝裕民，可惜往日的微妙感觉已荡然无存。邝裕民重提暗杀易先生的行动，王佳芝黯然答允。这次王佳芝与易先生的私情火速地发展起来，暗杀计划似乎进行得比上次顺利。
这夜，王佳芝假意与易先生逛珠宝店，其实早已通知枪手埋伏。就在这时，易先生竟向王佳芝送上钻戒，眼神中更闪过一丝深情；这个一闪即逝的眼神瞬间令王佳芝深深震撼，此刻她才恍然大悟，原来她对易先生所演的戏是假，但情却不假。奈何，这场戏终须有一个结局：一个无法承受却必须承受的结局......
Lust, Caution is a 2007 Chinese espionage thriller film directed by Chinese American director Ang Lee, based on the short story of the same name published in 1979 by Chinese author Eileen Chang. Lee, an Academy Award winner, won his second Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival with this film. The story is mostly set in Hong Kong in 1938 and in Shanghai in 1942, when the city was occupied by the Japanese and ruled by the puppet government of Wang Jingwei. It depicts a group of Chinese university students who plot to kill a high-ranking Chinese collaborator using an attractive young woman to lure him into a trap.

Mrs. Mak, a woman of sophistication and means, walks into a café, places a call, and then sits and waits. She remembers how her story began several years earlier, in 1938 China. She is not in fact Mrs. Mak, but shy Wong Chia Chi. With WWII underway, Wong has been left behind by her father, who has escaped to England. As a freshman at university, she meets fellow student Kuang Yu Min. Kuang has started a drama society to shore up patriotism. As the theater troupe's new leading lady, Wong realizes that she has found her calling, able to move and inspire audiences and Kuang. He convenes a core group of students to carry out a radical and ambitious plan to assassinate a top Japanese collaborator, Mr. Yee. Each student has a part to play; Wong will be Mrs. Mak, who will gain Yees' trust by befriending his wife and then draw the man into an affair. Wong transforms herself utterly inside and out, and the scenario proceeds as scripted until an unexpectedly fatal twist spurs her to flee. Shanghai, 1941. With no end in sight for the occupation, Wong having emigrated from Hong Kong goes through the motions of her existence. Much to her surprise, Kuang re-enters her life. Now part of the organized resistance, he enlists her to again become Mrs. Mak in a revival of the plot to kill Yee, who as head of the collaborationist secret service has become even more a key part of the puppet government. As Wong reprises her earlier role, and is drawn ever closer to her dangerous prey, she finds her very identity being pushed to the limit...
