Wow, what software did you use for this? I'd love to give this a try, any tips you could give me would be really appreciated.

I used Autopano pro to generate the still panorama, then Flexify 2 plugin for photoshop to make the planet (equirectangular to stereographic), then I used After Effects to mix the video and photos together!

Hey MrHandschuhmann, Smashingparadox, and SaltwaterHippo - I made it using 24 photos and 8 video sources, all shot with the same HD camera on a tripod. I've added a link to the flickr page which has the source video and photos so you can see how i did it. It's a common technique for photos, and I've just applied it to video. Glad you like it!
