@hyenachase I must be taking it persaonal because I remember my own thinking at the time was that Ray must be out of his mind to take on this legend so early in his career; I remember thinking Duran was the favorite, I expected him to beat Ray and knock him out. Obviously, after all these years I came to confuse my own favoritism to Duran with that of the pros at the time. Well, proves what they know. Anyway, trusting what you have told me, I've gotta admit being wrong. Thanks.
@MrPerryrice angelo dundee did not even rate duran as a welter, this is why Leonard went toe2toe with duran, and leonard would KO duran with in 4 rounds.
@MrPerryrice leonard was favorite for this fight only 2 out of 12 experts said duran would win, duran came up two weights and was given no chance at nearly 30 years old, just read the press before the fight :)
@mairtg1977 Dude! Do you know who Duran is? He shouldna had a chance against the young boy Leanard? Why not? Duran was a complete destroyer. Ray being able in his young career to even deal with him as effectively as he did, despite the loss, was the amazing thing. Everybody expected Duran to win this, Ray, properly so, was the underdog here; and as savage a pummeling as he took, he gave it right back without caving in, and was coming on at the end while Duran was spent. Ray dealt with him.
@MrPerryrice Duran owned Leonard this fight and Leonard did not deal with him otherwise he would have won the fight. Coming up to welterweight after 80 odd fights he shouldnt have had a chance against a younger, quicker and bigger figher but he deservedly won this. The fans reaction when the result was called said it all.
Duran gave Leonard a beating in this fight. It was the last time Sugar Ray fought like a man, Going forward Sugar danced & ran, and threw meaningless quick little punches during the last 30 seconds to steal rounds.
Watch Hager-Sugar again, close fight but Hagler won. Better yet watch Leonard-Terry Norris or Leonard-Camacho where Leonard coudn't run anymore.
@icebear1946 Duran was a iving legend at the time, and we all saw Ray deal with his ass; Ray's no joke.you must be outta your mind. Who agrees with you; the judges agree with me. Marvin couldn't do a damn thing against Ray. That's why he lost his title; cry if you please. I'm gonna watch Ray/Hagler again.

@cv003799 Cuevas was a great fighter? You moron, he was 34-15, with losses to greats like Andy Price, a guy Leonard knocked out in one round.
Palomino? He also lost to Andy Price. He had lost to Benitez right before fighting Duran. DeJesus whipped Duran, and then became a drug addict. Buchanan? Please. You don' t know boxing at all. This guy was awkward and spasdic.
They were good, DeJesus and Palomino maybe very good. None were great. Or even close.
@hyenachase I see I have to search out the press on this fight again.
