Base two calculation, this isn't something specifically Ethiopian and has been utilized in almost every culture on the globe at some point in time. It was used extensively by the Egyptians to do their mathematics.

P.S. The easiest way to do multiplication by 11 in your head is to add the multiplicand together and sandwich the result in between. 15 x 11 would be 1+5 = 6 therefore take your answer and fill the imaginary gap between the fifteen; and you get 165. It's like magic! ;-)
