An up-tempo version of J.P. Jones's bassline in 'What Is and What Should Never Be'.
My dubbed version of this song was removed from YouTube for copyright reasons, so I remade the video with just bass and a simple drum track. This will be the trend for most of my new videos so they won't get removed, plus I think it's easier to learn basslines from videos in this format.

  • Great stuff mate! Did you pick it by ears or notation? I've watched all your vids now and you're extremely accurate! I'm a rotosound endorsee (should be stipulated based on context).. Not everyones cup of tee but suit me well (66s).. have you tried the 99's, which is what JPJ used.. man do they make his playing style hard.. almost impossible LOL.. Piano type string.. very distinct and nice sounding but very unforgiving for any bad techniques..

  • My learning process varies... sometimes I use transcriptions, sometimes my ears and sometimes both. I find transcriptions are not fully accurate on their own and need some tweaking. A good looping music player is handy. I always play from memory regardless of the learning method. I like rotosounds, but right now I'm using DR sunbeams, they're my new favorite. Thanks for the comment!

  • I'm going to string my p-bass with Sunbeams, next time I change them.

What's the gauge of your strings? I can't decide if I should go for 45-100 or 45-105. So you have any suggestion?

  • 45-105 is pretty much the my usual gauge. not too fat - not too thin - just right

  • How long have you been playing? Did you take lessons?

  • He needs them tight for all that galloping I suppose! Anyways, great playing, JPJ rules!
