  • Obviously, Judy Garland and Deanna (Edna) Durbin's talents speak for themselves. They both have a large following then and today. Comparing them and the two genres are unnecessary to me. They are loved and respected in their own right.

  • This is a wonderfu short film. Judy is charming and a great singer, as always. She was one of the true American icons. A great singer and a great woman. We miss you Judy xo.

  • is this safe for boys to watch? will it adversely affect there developing hormones?

  • @PLBraxton WORD!

  • I read that Deanna auditioned for the voice of Snow White (Disney), but didn't get it because W. Disney found her "too professional" sounding. She was great, of course, but he wanted a more untrained feel.

  • @Glambert345 because judy stayed at MGM and carried out her fate as one of the most fortunate and unfortunate legends of the entertainment industry. Deanna was dropped, went to a different studio and was not subjected to the lifestyle Judy had - a good life, but not the same type she would have had if she stayed at MGM

  • dance! and make love!

  • very enjoyable

  • Judy passed away so long ago and Deana is still going strong.

  • @DreamsCumTrue469 What you had to say, especially towards the end of your post was most observant and also most prescient; yes, jazz 'n' blues and also the technology of the microphone which made "crooning" a reality was not so old when this short was made.

Indeed, as influential as the American idioms discussed were so widespread, there is still a very strong element of what you described in European pop music to this very day.

    Very perceptive; thank you!

  • @SatchmoSings I take it from your screen name that you understand that Judy is singing from the influence of the Black American Blues and Swing idiom. 80 years later it comes across as more "naturalistic," but in 1936 it was not as widely accepted, particularly with the older generation and upper class society whose standard of singing was closer to Durbin's European approach. If MGM had kept Durbin instead of Garland, they would have had a totally different history.
