words and music Gitz Rice, 1917. Rice served in the Canadian Army in Europe during the Great War. He was also a pianist and songwriter, and wrote many songs during the war to entertain his comrades. This is arguably one of his most popular.

this version is based on a later adaptation by US troops, and was first recorded by Lead Belly in 1948, and then by Pete Seeger in 1961.

my interpretation was recorded at Miss Eugenie's Boot Camp, February 12, 2011, on a pile of old bark chips. I used a Collings concert ukulele. Hope you enjoy it!!!
