The hardest song in the game for playing on drums, not including TTFAF. Two reasons:
1) The single-color note streams followed by 3-note chords after each stream, over and over again. Extremely tiring, and very hard to use 2 sticks for the 3 notes after playing the fast note stream because you have to bounce your left hand really quickly at the very end of the stream, to hit the chord. I could not find an easier sticking pattern. I show it on Slow speed at the end of the video. If you watch my left hand, it does this little "flick" thing to go from the last note of the stream into the chord.
2) The solo is really organic. I think the person who transcribed this song for Neversoft was a little over the top with the weird spacing of the notes. I swear some are too early and I had to learn to play parts of it faster than I hear them. And I think some notes in the solo are missing! But it is such a rush when you play some of the riffs in the solo right. The solo in the song by itself rocks. And the section that builds up to it rocks. I get fired up when I play it (and then I miss notes ;-)
I 5-star'd this one earlier today, but tried many times again tonight and this was the closest I could get... 352680, 4-star, 2.730x average multiplier. But I was pretty solid at the beginning, and I got a lot of the solo right, so I'm happy.
I tried out a new camera angle on this video so you can see what I'm doing on the drum pads better. But people have spoken... I'm going to switch back to the old way for future vids. Thanks.
Here's what I notice about this video ;-)...
* I'm getting pretty good at using my hands for GYO chords, yay!
* I'm so tired by the middle of the 2nd set of verses that you can see I don't even *try* to hit the chords. I just go for the single-color note streams in between, just to keep from failing. My left arm is dying at that point. I've never been a good heavy metal kinda, single-stroke-rolling, symmetrical type of drummer. My left hand speed has never been able to keep up with my right.
* I had a full SP reserve during the solo and didn't use it -- I waste a bunch of SP note riffs because I love the solo so much. I don't like hearing the crowd cheering over it :-D
* I miss the very last easy note in the solo right when I'm about to use my built-up multiplier and full star power reserve to go into the last bridge where I can usually bank on the multiplier. I'm usually not very vocal, but you can hear me go "AOOOWWW" as I realize that mistake has cost me my 5-stars for this take!
Thanks for checking this stuff out!!
FAQ:
----
Q: How does it work?
A: Everything is explained in detail here: http://egyokeo.com/midihero
Q: How do you do 3-note chords?
A: All "two adjacent note" power chords are mapped to the top 4 pads, so with two sticks I can play any 3-note chord except GYO.
Q: How do you do whammy and star power?
A: I use a bass drum pedal on my right foot to activate star power, and a hi-hat pedal on my left foot to control whammy depth.
Q: How do you hold notes?
A: My MIDI Hero software has an auto-hold feature for every note hit because it's more natural for a drummer to play that way. It's not a good feeling to mash sticks into drum pads to hold notes.
Q: How much does this cost?
A: The drumKat is a pro-quality MIDI drum pad set. These days, they run about $1k. I also use a PC to run my custom home-brew MIDI Hero software to interpret the drum events. Then the "XIM" and "XFPS" add another $100+. This is not made for the masses. This is a one-of-a-kind setup.
Q: Do you play real drums? Are you in a band?
A: Yes, I've been playing drums since 1986. I have been in various bands from Jazz to Ska over the years. Right now I'm in the Detroit-based ska band The Exceptions.
Q: Are you getting Rock Band?
A: I'm not so sure anymore. Rock drum parts are generally pretty boring, repetitive and monotonous. The rhythms in Guitar Hero are so much more challenging and fun. Plus Rock Band doesn't support a standard controller and so I cannot use my custom rig with it.
Q: Is "MIDI Hero" available to the public?
A: I haven't decided yet if I'm going to make it publicly available. I'll keep the answer to this question updated in the FAQs of all future videos if anything ever changes in this department. If I did ever release it, I'd also likely have a link to it on my website (link above).
