Ignorant Landlords UK (Suzy Butler) 5

ITV Meridian News (from 13th August 2010): Media still labelling what was a legal tenant as a "squatter". Suzy Butler could have mitigated the risks by paying for specialist information in advance of becoming a landlord, and letting out her home. Or she could have done solid research of her own... there is plenty of educational material on the internet about letting out your home. She could have insisted on potential tenants providing her with very good references from previous landlords.

Tenants have rights as well. They do not become squatters 5 days after being late with rent (whether that is true or not Carmen Nobre was in arrears - not proven to a court, that is for certain), nor if the landlord decides they want immediate access to the tenant's home. If the landlord wants to claim evict, it's up for a court to hear and balance both sides. Suzy Butler was happy to let her home out at the approximate market rent a professional educated good landlord would, so the tenant deserves a professional good standard of return. Not being harassed by intrusion and a media campaign against them, for a situation that arose mostly through the landlord's (Suzy Butler) own ignorance. In my opinion the reporting of this situation has set back and seriously damaged tenants rights all over England - because of the irresponsible way the media have reported it. Also I'm very much feeling there is a case for harassment of the tenant. If I was in charge I'd like charges brought against the landlord, and multi-million pound fines (or damages paid to Carmen Nobre) in successful legal claims against many of the national and local media and broadcasters for the way they have labelled and misrepresented Carmen Nobre as a squatter (when in fact a legal tenant), which could very well have caused her serious humiliation and damaged her character/prospects/employment within the UK in other ways.

Internet forum talk about this case is alive with Suzy Butler supporters now claiming "tenants become squatters after 5 days", and "it's not ok to harass tenants but when they become squatters (after 5 days) you can pull them out of the house by the hair". And many worse ignorant positions of people thinking it's ok to make your own "common-sense" version of the law if you don't want to bother reading up about the real law in advance of becoming a landlord, that you can claim "the law is broken" if you find tenant has rights to stop you entering their home, or if ignorant landlord suddenly decides they immediately want the tenant out of property for whatever other reasons.
