The Good Shepherd Convent - Cork

More Images and history at.

http://silverstealth.fotopic.net/c1509609.html

Built in 1881, the Good Shepherd Convent was the site of an orphanage and a Magdalene laundry until the late 1970s.

Three main buildings - a home, convent, and orphanage - have been in a derelict condition since a serious fire in 2003.

The laundry building was among a number of buildings that were destroyed in that fire.

It seems that the threat of being 'shamed' in the eyes of the community was more frightening than allowing your child to be taken away, abused, humiliated and broken.

My heart breaks for the women who suffered in these places :'(

  • @THEGLASSOFMILK2 The land should be sold and money given to survivors.

  • @THEGLASSOFMILK2 You are completely right. Unfortuneatly Ulster Bank bought the development and in the middle of making it all into apartment blocks....Upsetting or what? :(

  • @Dehzee (Sorry ran out of space) and that were residents in industrial schools etc....were still devout Catholics right until their last breath and the many that still survive today are still devout Catholics and these are the people that have the perfect excuse to NOT remain faithful to this religion...Religion may be a choice that is true but some people really truly believe in this faith even the ones that have been through such hardship with it (such as the above).

  • I'm guessing you were meant to say not be proud of. I am not trying to get into an argument here. I studied this in University and wrote an entire thesis on the industrial school scandal and child neglect and Catholicism in Ireland. I totally get what you are saying I just think it is rather harsh to penalise EVERYONE due to the mistakes of a minority. If you have truly watched the documentaries and read the books you would know that the many people that went through these institutions.....(TBC)

  • I wish they could post photos (even from the '60's through the '80's) of these nuns who abused

the girls. I see so many girls & women who were scarred for life yet the identity of these

cowardly 'women of the cloth' are hidden. Their faces should be smeared over the screen!

What they did was contrary to CHRISTLIKE!

  • @amaranthos3 I agree!

  • @bargeanimal Absolutely, assets should be seized and distributed to survivors.

  • @groovylocks I agree those views are an issue, but as many boys as girls& maybe more, were abused by this church, continue 2 b abused by this church, that possessed pope hides it & survivors speak of satanic rituals & sacrifice involving that pope occurring. The root is a bizarre evil empire working through many bodies, institutes, banks corporations. Watch now while the pope calls 4 a world order. He wants his fourth reich & a global socialist cashless world. There can be no freedom w/o cash.
