Mocko jumbies are a tradition on St. Croix that is several hundred years old.

They originally were intended to ward of evil spirits.

It is now a great honor to be a mocko jumbie and training starts when you are only five or six years old.

This video is part of a performance of mocko jumbies on St. Croix during the Jump Up Festival the night of the Friday after Thanksgiving, 2007, in downtown Christiansted.

  • It's amazing when they really get going, like the one near the end. Some of them are so young! It just wouldn't be a jump up without the mocko jumbies.
