Edna St. Vincent Millay reads 'Love is not all'.
Pictures taken by Sean Jeating (tetrapilotomie.blogspot.com) from around Ireland.
Compiled by me on Windows Movie Maker.
Credits music, intro to 'faerie stories' by the Peatbog Faeries.
The Poem:
Love is not all: It is not meat nor drink
Nor slumber nor a roof against the rain,
Nor yet a floating spar to men that sink
and rise and sink and rise and sink again.
Love cannot fill the thickened lung with breath
Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
Yet many a man is making friends with death
even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
It well may be that in a difficult hour,
pinned down by need and moaning for release
or nagged by want past resolution's power,
I might be driven to sell your love for peace,
Or trade the memory of this night for food.
It may well be. I do not think I would.

I hope the inheritance is enormous !! haha

  • A U.S. friend of mine who has a degree in English was introduced to Millay by me. He'd never even heard of her and was surprised that she was not covered under poets. Just as in her real life, where both men and women were mesmerised by her, I was drawn into her spellbinding personality by reading the biography Savage Beauty. This is the first time I hear her voice (am still assimilating the effect). After visiting Camden, Poughkeepsie and Steepletop, she finally let me go. Be ware. ;~)

  • @superkatz11: Edna St. Vincent Millay never had any children. Actually none of the Millay sisters had children. A very obvious fact. Refer to any of the numerous biographies written on her. You're full of shit.

  • @superkatz11 No offense, but how exactly are you related to Edna St. Vincent Millay?

  • she happens to be my great, great grandmother..:)!!, would have loved to have met her.

  • I couldn't agree more. Brava.

  • Thank you. I bought the DVD a few years ago, in which her sister narrated her life story and where Edna is buried next to her husband. Edna is an American treasure and I hope she will not be forgotten

  • Thank you very much for this video dear Godfreemorals! She had a beautiful and deep voice! Congratulations and keep up the good work.
