Based on Tim Minchin's White Wine in the Sun (Christmas Song) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0s68-GLGWY but see the live version too, he's a hoot! This dedicated to my father, family, friends and stardust sister!
I didn't change much of the beginning but changed most of the latter half.
This is essentially the perfect Christmas song for me. I realise that it is meant for those in a different hemisphere from me, and that I've 'defeated' the point of the song by winterising it, but I've really never found a Christmas song that fits my beliefs and experiences so well. Doesn't mean I don't love Tim Minchin's version! (I do! And I appreciate it for my Australian friends! ♥)
Sorry for the bad quality video - I don't know why it did that for just the singing part. Anyway, hope you're well!

F
I'm looking forward to Christmas.
Bb F
It's sentimental, I know, but I just really like it.
F
I am hardly religious Bb F
I'd rather break bread with Carson than Desmond Tutu, to be honest.
C C7
And yes, I have all of the usual objections to consumerism, Bb
To commercialisation of ancient religion
And the westernisation of dead Palestinian F
Press-ganged into selling Playstations and beer.
C
But I still really like it.
I, I really like Christmas.
Though I'm not expecting a visit from Jesus.
C
I'll be seeing my dad,
C7 Dm
My brother and sister, my gram and my mum. Bb
They'll be drinking cocoa in the snow.
I'll be seeing my dad,
My sister and brother, my gram and my mum.
They'll be drinking cocoa in the snow.
I don't go for ancient wisdom.
I don't believe just 'cause ideas are tenacious it means they are worthy.
I get freaked out by churches;
Some of the hymns that they sing have nice chords, but lyrics are dodgy.
And yes I have all of the usual objections
To the miseducation of children forced into a cult institution
And taught to externalise blame
And to feel ashamed
And to judge things as plain right and wrong
But I quite like songs.
I'm not expecting great presents:
The old combination of clothes, prose and chocolate is just fine by me.
Cause I'll be seeing my dad,
My brother and sisters, my gram and my mum:
They'll be drinking cocoa in the snow.
I'll be seeing my dad,
My sisters and brother, my gram and my mum:
They'll be drinking cocoa in the snow.
Bb
And you, my new sister,
F
My tired college friend,
Bb
You'll be swung round the room
F
Like a whirlwind in fresh-fallen snow.
Bb
And we're growing to know
F
And will keep learning through the days
Bb
That wherever we are and whatever we face
C7 Dm
These are the people who'll make us feel safe in this world, C
My stardust sister.
And if, my new sister
When we're twenty-one or thirty-one
And Christmas comes around
And we find ourselves nine-thousand miles from home,
C7Csus4
We'll know what ever comes
C7Dm
Our brother and sister and pets and our mums
Bb
Will be waiting for us in the snow.
C7Csus4
Girl, when Christmas comes:
C7
Our brother and sisters, our father and fam,
C7Dm
Our gransdparents, cousins and pets and our mums Bb
Will be drinking cocoa in the snow, F
They'll be waiting for us in the snow, Bb
Love, whenever we come F
They'll be drinking cocoa in the snow.
Bb
Waiting
F
I, I really like Christmas:
Bb F
It's sentimental, I know.
Well that was terrible. Anyway you could have easily changed the order around in the chorus so say dad, my mother, sister, gran and my bro.
That way it would rhyme with snow.
Anyway,
The beauty of that song is the patriotism in the clear emphasis on the australian christmas. so changing it is just a little bit fucking stupid.

Laughter, thanks for the honest comment! I decided years ago that I never wanted lyrics in a song just for rhymes, when I wouldn't sing/say them IRL - I would never say bro save in satire. But yes, that certainly would have worked. I enjoyed the rhyme of 'cocoa' and 'snow;' 'twas good enough for me.
I appreciate the patriotism of an Australian Christmas - but alas I do not live there, and I adore the other concepts of the song! I understand your frustration. Thanks for the comment, though!

Definitely 5 stars!!! I love your voice in this--so sweet! I so agree with so much of this! I'm a Unitarian Universalist too! Mostly I just pick and choose whatever feels right for me...which changes almost all the time. :-D Anyway, I'd never heard this song before, and I LOVE it!

Blushes and smiles! Thank you! YAY for finding fellow UUs! I absolutely love that! Your comment made my day, I just wasn't able to respond then! Thank you for this comment - finding UUs makes me unbelievably happy! And I feel the same about my beliefs. :) And yes, Tim Minchin is brilliant with his lyrics! Even when he's being a bit...inappropriate. :P Thanks again!

I'm so glad you listened to Tim Minchin's White Wine in the Sun! It's originally a patriotic Christmas song for Australia/summer-Christmas-locations, but alas, I am from the snowier part of the globe for Christmas! And quite proud of that in turn. I love snow!
So glad you loved it! Tim Minchin can certainly be quite raunchy with his songs, but he makes keen political points and does capture a glorious measure of wit in everything he does! Clever man, Tim Minchin. :D
