About 100 people gathered in Rock Creek Park on April 5, 2009, to hear a random collection of tape loops made by participants. The venue was a dump in a federal space in Washington, D.C., but it included carved stones from the old facade of the U.S. Capitol. People placed their tape players in various locations around this burial ground of architectural history.
It was impossible to capture the sweep of the event in any single video or sound recording, as it was spread over a large area. This is just a sample, a moment in time.
The loops were about 30 seconds on cassette tapes that played back continuously. Participants recorded sounds of their choice beforehand and placed their battery-powered playback decks around the site.
