I first heard this 45 back in the mid 90's on a mix tape that was dubbed from one of the old Pebbles LP compilations. Even in tinny fidelity It's been a favorite of mine since then.

I have searched online for years, yet found little information about this group..
Because of it's high catalog number, some record collectors and garage rock fans have written that this 45 was recorded in 1972, but it's from 1968. It was the only Sire 45 to be distributed by Roulette Records. It might have been this now-legendary record company's first released 45.

It took me over a decade to find my own copy of this gem. Either I was quickly outbidded or the price was way too high. I finally scored a copy for $20 last year on E-bay (the seller had listed it with the other side "Loving Kind Of Way").

This dub is right from my 45, and unlike those garage comps, you're hearing it at the correct speed and hopefully in much better fidelity. I still wish some reissue company like Rhino, Sundazed or Ace would find the master tape and reissue it on CD.

  • Dexter Foote is a pseudonymn of Richard Gottehrer. I asked him years ago, when I ran into him at the WFMU Record Fair if he remembered anything about the group, and he said they were from the West Coast - San Francisco area.

The 45 was released in March, 1968, got a pick hit mention in Record World magazine, but for the A side, "Loving Kind Of Way". Hard to believe the label pushed that side instead of "Something's Gone".

  • @MopTopMike Thanks for the info. I wish some company like Sundazed, Norton or Ace in the UK could get their hands on the master tape and re-issue it in better fidelity. Every copy I've heard of it song is over-compressed and distorted.
