  • "Ich bin Berliner" means "I am a citizen of Berlin". "Ich bin ein Berliner" usually means the same. In some cases it can also mean "I am a doughnut", so it depends on the context. In this context it was very clear that he meant the first meaning. Kennedy did not make a mistake. No one in Germany ever taught that the second meaning could be meant and just a few persons heard of this false urban legend.

  • @BehnamLot you are right.

  • "Ich bin Berliner" means "I am a citizen of Berlin.". "Ich bin ein Berliner" means "I am a doughnut with marmalade.". That's what were citizens laughing for. This is the truth.

  • @metanoeo1 Well, if you WANT to interpret it this way, it is grammatically correct. However, if some said "Ich bin ein Berliner" in a context like this, no German would immediatly think of the jelly donought -especially since this happened in Berlin and in Berlin itself the jelly donought is not even called "Berliner". Read the comment on top from BenahmLot. Perfect explanation!

  • @Arielle250590 That's not true. My German professor in college, who is a native of Hamburg, is the one who told me that Kennedy called himself a jelly filled doughnut. It's because he used the article "ein". She is a native German and has a doctorate in German, so I'll take her word for it.

  • to skip to good bit press 8

  • Ich ein Bin ein Berliner. Ja genau , Keinn Hamburger

  • russians liberated you.

    russian fight, and jewish's torments

  • Ich bin ein berliner ...I am a jelly doughnut =)

  • NO native German would EVER understand the donut thing! In fact I didn't even get it when Americans told me about that mistake.

  • Ich bin ein .. donut
