Overall we don't want to scare people in to action with FUD about open networks. We really tried to put the emphasis on how people should secure themselves and I think we can agree there is an issue when so many networks are using WEP - which we known can be broken in no time at all in basically every instance. The video is to raise mainstream awareness, not to answer every question for security pros because we know you guys already know alot more :). I hope this helps. Happy to field queries!

Hello - thought I'd dive in here and add some comments. 100% agree that the figure of open wireless networks does not mean that those networks are verifiably insecure. We couldn't do such a verification of captive portals without breaking the law. That said, the traffic is obviously unencrypted and MITM-able unless people use a VPN or SSL - even then for many they will accept bad certificate warnings or alike leaving them vulnerable.

Possibly not; but im sure heaps of them are probably running captive portal. Kinda a lame scare tactic imho.

They can surely be, but there's another point of view: networks without any encryption are subjects to MITM attacks.
