Jason Varitek snapped an 0-for-14 slide with a tiebreaking homer and the Red Sox beat Tampa Bay 4-2. Boston's veteran catcher becomes a free agent at the end of the season and after career-low numbers in 2008, there's rumor he may not be back. (Oct. 19)

I love varitek, i couldn't see him in a different uniform. Just because of one bad year doesn't make him a bad player. He is a solid catcher behind the plate. This year has been a good year for him so far and i hope we keep him for the rest of his career. :)

i really think we should keep him for maybe another year or two.. maybe he doesnt have the bat he used to but he still has that great and rare mind that alot of catchers dont. plus he would be a good coach when he retires...

Ironically, as I recall, Tek was the first person to hit a home run in 2008 that was ultimately reversed via the umpire calls. The universe was against him.

Varitek is a bum. The C on his jersey really stands for Crap. He's no captain, Pedroia is the real captain. Cash has a better arm and bat so Varitek can take a hike. If the red sox resign him they are retarded.

Exactly, he's old, and he has no offensive productivity.
Everyone says he's so great behind the plate, but that's just the baseball writers who have never played baseball spouting bad opinions, fact is that nearly any major league catcher could call a good game if the pitchers they are working with are: Curt Schilling, Pedro Martinez, Lester, Dice-K, Beckett, Papelbon, etc.

One home run does not make up for what he has not done all year long.
