I would have been amazed if it was opening a more difficult gate. I'm sorry but the barns I've been to have cow proof gates, it's basically a bolt like that but the handle bit goes and slots into a bit of metal so it would be pull left til you hit metal, pull up, pull left again. And all with a strong spring. Even basic field gates for most places I see either have chain fastenings or a bolt with a strong spring.
