~ Albert King, Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble: Antone's, Austin TX, February 26 & 27, 1983

Info: croz.fm

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble released their first album, Texas Flood, in the summer of 1983 and it wasnt long before the world at large discovered what Texans and residents of his home town of Austin had known for years: here was a remarkable new voice in the storied chorus of the blues. Little did anyone know, though, how massive SRVs success would be and how many new listeners he would bring to the blues. History will record that album and that year as a turning point in the genre perhaps.

When I posted a couple of Albert King shows from the 70s earlier this week I mentioned the huge influence he had on Stevie Ray Vaughan. SRV revered all of the greats and learned from all of them, but in terms of the SRV sound no player had a bigger impact on him than Albert King. He studied Albert like Mozart studied Back; he learned solos note-for-note and listened to anything he could get his hands on. The influence is profound, and hey, if you are gonna pick a master at whose feet to study you can do a hell of a lot worse than one of the Kings of the blues!

So these two nights from the legendary Antones club in Austin, recorded months before Texas Flood was released with Albert King and his band joined for a closing jam by Stevie Ray on the first night and a blistering set by SRV and Double Trouble on the second are a great document of a legend at his prime and a soon to be legend still working to be heard.

These are excellent soundboard recordings and artwork is included in the first archive.

  • I also used to see this band in Seattle, GREAT band, and great guitarist. No, it's not Stevie Ray, I don't remember the guy's name, but a great guitar player with great tone. The delay on the guitar track sounds like it's from the mixing board--Tatsujiin, you have no idea what you are talking about, dude.

  • was the drummer on this recording, (Joe Guzman Seattle Wa.) Live at Bumpershoot.

It would have been an honor if Stevie Ray was on it, but he is not. John Lee is on vocals.

  • we figure its better to have made the effort.

always looking for more, especially with reese in the band.austin city limits is probably the only. shame, there should be more of that band on video. becausethey were adding to most of the earlier songs new solo sections which i love. ted

  • I don't know your source, but this definitely isn't Vaughan again. Especially not in '83. He was much better than this guy. Not to mention the tone is very shitty here and it's not the recording.
