The Dutch have an inferiority complex, caused by losing their leadership in the world in the 18th century. They don't care about their athletes; they only care about foreign recognition. Being famous is not allowed in the Netherlands, reason why they have a saying that sounds like "Act normal, you're already crazy enough as it is". Kramer screwing up at the Olympics on the 10km is a major blow to the country's self-esteem.
