Experimental Performance of
Shadow, Dance and Visual Art

Art Management FNT 709

• Sarvena Dezvareh
Master of Art & Design
New Media

• Rasfan Abu Kassim
Master of Art & Design
Fine Art & Technology

The reason that team chosen in this form is based on talents, concepts, harmony of coworkers Rasfan and Sarvenaz as a team in this project.

Performing poses as dancer view is very different from what is needed in this project!
That means, capturing the movements and poses from dance through shadow needs a dancer who's familiar in both painting and dance and also be aware of power of shadow and light and disability of it and also being familiar with the spirit of the chosen new age folk music.

Base on this fact, and base on portfolios and talents, the teams managed and shaped for Sarvenaz to do the dancing, and Rasfan to do the paintings.

Background and Idea:

The ideas for the hybrid performance derive from observation of the traditional Malay performances and the potential of light and shadow. Thus the performances involves the Wayang Kulit ensemble, the Malay dance and also the visual art of painting are most suited to execute the idea and potential of light and shadow performance. The qualities of the Wayang Kulit light and shadow inspired this hybrid performance. What is it that we intend to do is a dynamic experimental performance of the shadow puppets which will be replaced by life size dancer that will dance behind the canvas and from the cast shadow of the dancer the visual artists will trace and paint the gesture and movement of the dancer by the aim of capturing the beauty of dance movements.

This performance is ideally viewed from 360 degrees by the audience rather than the normal view where the audience sit statically in one position. With 360 degrees of view the audiences are invited to move and see the entire angle of the performances, as it's like they are invited to the studio work of artist.
This performance is our new and creative interpretation of the traditional performances and we hope the outcome of this performance will spark a new image of brush lines on canvas as an art.

The actual performance is going to be simultaneity, the new age music, the dance and a live painting.

Objectives:

The objectives are to experience the potential of light and shadow performance inspired by the traditional shadow play. The performances' hope to appeal a new look of experimental painting, and new expression by following music to a dance, dance to a shape of shadow and transforming shadow to a painting and finally capturing the beauty of dance by every secend of it.

Timing:

The performance took place at the Auditorium the Faculty of Art and Design UiTM, 8.00 p.m on 3rd November 2007
