We have leased three Outbacks, a Tribeca, & test drove the old Forester each time we leased & never felt it matched the Outback's comfort. This year we bought an 09 Forester because we felt it was:
1. More fun than Outback in both looks & driving
2. As comfortable as the Outback.
3. Great turning, & visibility
4. Interior trim (cup holders, console, iPod, etc) is superb.
5. It looks like a small SUV & I think it looks cool.
BTW - With a set of Blizzaks It is amazing in the Michigan-UP Snow.

Yeah, as a streetable family car it is sufficient. In fact I think it excels above the competition (other vehicles in its class). However, I agree that it has lost the uniqueness that Subaru easily could have incorporated around the upgrades.
Basically it's a little better in a lot of ways, but in falling into the mainstream look it lost some of its personality.
This being said I would probably still buy one if I needed a mid size SUV. CR-V and Rav-4 don't even come close in performance.

I've had Land Bruisers, a Sorento, a Terious and i think the Foz will get a look in at some point. Great, another roo bar, tow bar and long range fuel tank to build :)

Blizzak WS60's are awesome.

I just picked up mine this week! Newport Blue Pearl Premium with all weather package.
Love the deep pocket cup holders, bright head lights, turn on a dime steering (better than my car!), moon roof, and many other features!
I would not have bought the old style forester... too wagony :-)

I agree - the compact aesthetics of the Forester are what made it special as an SUV.
