@lastnightdinner yes buying, as in paying money for it, like how most people get their dogs if they aren't adopted from a shelter. How else do you suppose she gets a dog? Steals it? Conjure one up out of thin air? Push one out like a baby? Buying it doesn't make it like "a toy with life", there's nothing wrong with her choice of words. Maybe you can't buy their affection, but you CAN most definitely buy dogs, since people usually don't give them away for free.
