I know. He's always so unflappable and stoic and dry about everything -- then he gets whacked with a number like this one. The look on his face when he looks up at Bartlet gave me a lump in my throat.
When i first saw this scene and saw that Bartlett was giving Charlie an actual present from the President of the US, I was going "Oh Shit!" with my my mouth open
... then he said the knife was from a silversmith named Paul Revere I was like "Holy Freaking Shit!!!"
I wonder just exactly how much a knife made by Paul Revere for New Hampshire's signatory of the Declaration of Independence (the original and very real Dr. Josiah Bartlett - with two T's), passed on to his fourth great-grandson (the fictional Jed) who became President of the United States would be worth at auction? Like the ad says, "Priceless!"
Yeah, this scene gets to me as well. Best series since "Hill Street Blues". Written for serious grownups, and richly deserving of it's 27 Emmys.
