NEWPORT, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Megan Maxwell's mother says all she can do now is pray, and wait.

The then, 19-year-old went missing more than a year ago.

On Friday, dozens joined her to lift up a community prayer for Megan.

A group from North Carolina came to town as part of a tour to remember more than 100 missing person cases all over the country.

"CUE" Community United Effort, Center for Missing Persons got involved with the Maxwell family as soon as Megan disappeared in April of 2009.

They came back Friday to let them know they haven't forgotten.

"They put signs, yard sale signs, and politics signs, different signs up," Newport resident Alvin Kilgore told Volunteer TV, pointing to a utility pole in his yard.

"I jerk them down," he said. "I'll leave this one," Kilgore continued, referencing the "missing" sign for Maxwell.

"They need to find her. She's been gone too long."

Kilgore never met Megan, but he is praying for her safe return. She vanished 16 months ago.

"Some days I feel she's gone, other days I hold onto that hope," Lisa Maxwell, Megan's mom, told WVLT.

Mom works tirelessly to find Megan.
She helped organize Friday's rally, which is meant to bring the case back into the public eye.

"A lot of times we hear that when people drop from the media that, 'oh, we thought that person was found,' when in fact that's not true," Monica Caison explained.

Caison founded CUE and rolled into Newport with other group members to circle around the Maxwell family.

"Sometimes I feel like I let Megan down because I can't seem to find her," Lisa said.

"We're really here to honor Megan today and we hope the community is reminded that she is missing and while they're out boating and while they're out walking," Caison told the crowd, "keep an eye out. She's got to be around here somewhere."

Lisa Maxwell appreciates any and all attention her daughter's case receives, because more than a year later hope dwindles.

"You can't grieve. There's got to be a word for it. I don't know what it is," Ms. Maxwell said.

Perhaps it could be your tip that leads investigators to Megan, and give Kilgore the go ahead to tear down the "missing" sign too.

Investigators work on Megan's case weekly, if not daily.

A new sheriff was just elected into office in Cocke County.

He was at the rally and says the case going to be one of his priorities.

You may recall the primary suspect Jeffery Stock, remains in jail on unrelated charges.
