In the final scene of Gioachino Rossini's opera "Il viaggio a Reims" (The Journey to Rheims) every foreign guest is asked by Baron Trombonok (Enzo Dara) to perform a song that reminds of his/her homeland. The Englishman Lord Sidney says he knows no songs except one: "God Save the King". He then sings the English hymn. Samuel Ramey used to finish the song with a spectacular virtuoso cadenza that even got mentioned in Wikipedia.

Berlin, 1992, Claudio Abbado conducting. The audio version of this performance has been released on CD by Deutsche Grammophon.

  • Is this performance of the entire opera available on DVD or video? I'd love to have a copy.

  • @bassfanne45

Everyone would love to! :( But it was only a telecast. I think it's a crime before the world culture not to release jewels of performances like this one.

  • Can I only "like" this video? there should be a choice that says "love" rather than just like or dislike. This is amazing!!! Bravo Sam!!!!!!!!!

  • Very beautiful rich voice! Wonderfully sung and very agile for a bass! Bravo!

  • Love it totally. Ramey is so wonderful.

  • And I see that someone else already said the same thing about having a "Love" button instead of a "Like" button!

  • @WotansSpeer Simply the most splendid bass ever!

  • I simply love this! It's another of those videos where you wish there was a "Love" button instead of just a "Like" button.
