@Deogol16 - Of course it was socio-economic reasons. How does a language rise to prominence for "linguistic reasons"? Except for suggesting a language could somehow become popular for pure aesthetic beauty, it's gonna be political and economic forces!
It's often difficult to know if someone is merely simplifying for an audience or simply doesn't know enough about a subject. Present day Italians don't speak Italian because the Romans conquered them and made them speak Latin. Latin was one dialect that rose to prominence...just as Standard English is merely one dialect that became powerful for socio-economic (not linguistic) reasons.
