my dad was serving on her at the time of the accident. i was 7 months old at the time, i was born in portsmouth hospital, and lived in philly for the duration of her being mothballed in the philly base, so had the honor of seeing my fathers beautiful ship regularly. anyone that served on her i respect greatly, thankyou for all of these posts.

On the Salem we have a memorial room for the Newport News but i still don't know exactly what happend?

Dex great job. This is a real tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Your efforts to preserve these and the other memories of the USS Newport News are greatly apprecieated by all.
I was aboard Saratoga when this happened. We took on many of your fallen shipmates that night, I salute them.
