The 2011 Delaware Bike Summit was held on Friday, October 14, at the Virden Center on the Lewes Campus of the University of Delaware. Speakers included public officials, as well as others who are interested in strengthening Delaware's biking community. In welcoming attendees to the summit, Transportation Secretary Shailen Bhatt announced a new joint initiative with the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC). The new initiative will mean the creation of 19 bicycle-friendly trails throughout Delaware, including a proposed Georgetown to Lewes to Cape Henlopen Rail Trail, which would have its first phase in Lewes. During the event, Secretary Bhatt and DNREC Secretary Collin O'Mara signed a Memorandum of Agreement to begin the new effort. Secretary Bhatt also spoke to the participants about other things that DelDOT is doing to work with bicyclists.
