The underrated comedian Jimmy Edwards gives his all on trombone and xylophone for an ATV variety show in the late 1960s. Jack Parnell and orchestra provide backing and try not to miss cues through laughing. Apologies for the quality. It was recorded on Sellotape.

  • What a masterful performance demonstrating not just a brilliant comedic talent, but a superb skill in musicianship - it had me roaring with laughter.

  • An excellent demonstration if this man's master of comedy techniques, and ability to make us laugh. And all the more impressive because he suffered serious facial burns during WW2, and was forced to hide his sexual orientation all his life.

  • Anyone remember Jonny Briggs?

  • @grafun2 - the Ghosts of Motley Hall was indeed a 1970s Granada kids prog, but the jester was played by Arthur English - also the caretaker in Grace Bros Department store (are you being served?)...

  • could you say hell on tv back then?

  • "To the iron curtain, may it rust in peace." Ha!

  • I think I was thinking of a series called the ghosts of motley hall, although I don't think jimmy edwards was in that. It may be that I saw ghost of a chance when I was small and got the two mixed up

  • @mriys The ghosts of Motely Hall.

  • @mriys There was a film called Ghost of a chance with Edwards and that was about children trying to save a mansion with the help of some ghosts headed by Edwards. Are you thinking of that?

  • I have vague memories of a family tv show in the early to mid 70's which was about a group of ghosts in a big mansion. I think one of them was played by jimmy edwards. Does anyone remember this series, and if so could you tell me the title? thanks

  • Great to see my cousin. Jim's mum was a New Zealander.
