Part of the TCM's Film Festival "Race & Hollywood: Asian Images in Film". Final comments on the movie The Joy Luck Club (1993). Aired on Thursday June 26, 2008.
The amazing thing about the movie is that race and ethnicity were really not central to the story. It's a story about people who just happen to be Chinese and Chinese American.
To make a race issue out of it is wrong.
One thing that is not part of this film at all is the mentality of being an oppressed minority. None of the people in the film talk about that in any way and all are successful.
