FRONTAL OFFSET TEST

OVERALL EVALUATION: Good
Structure/safety cage Injury measures Restraints/dummy kinematics
Head/neck Chest Leg/foot, left Leg/foot, right
Good Good Good Good Acceptable Good

Important: Frontal crash test ratings can be compared only among vehicles of similar weight.
Test details:

The Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute were introduced in the 2001 model year and structurally modified beginning with 2005 models to improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. The Mercury Mariner, introduced in the 2005 model year, also had the structural modifications. The Mazda Tribute skipped the 2007 model year.

Beginnng with 2009 models, frontal airbag, seat belt, and additional structural modifications to were made to further improve occupant protection in frontal crashes. Also starting with 2009 models, these ratings and specifications (except weight) also apply to the hybrid (gas-electric) versions of the Escape, Mariner, and Tribute.

Restraints/dummy kinematics — Dummy movement was well controlled. During rebound, the dummy's head hit the B-pillar and roof rail.

Injury measures — Measures taken from the head, neck, and chest indicate low risk of injuries to these body regions in a crash of this severity. Forces on the right foot indicate that foot injuries would be possible. Head acceleration from the B-pillar/roof rail hit was low.

  • @ChiTown60621 in a frontal crash test the side airbag must not deploy just imagine u crash like this and then another car dosent see you and crash you in the side but OO you dont have anymore side airbags. No the side airbags must deploy only in side crashes

  • no, no head injury and a minor leg injury

see all

  • @ford2219 In all new Ford's, the side airbags deploy in severe frontal accidents. Most new vehicles do as well, and it will be a government mandated law that this has to happen by I believe 2013 or 2015

  • @MySamisbest 4 months ago some guy wasn't paying attention and drove into my lane in an intersection and hit me head on. My car looked worse than these crash test videos. I would show you pictures but youtube won't let me post the link.

  • You know what are the changes you are always gonna hit a wall like that to get that kind of damage

  • love the escape

  • @corvetteboy10 That was the driver curtain airbag, and that was in the IIHS offset. Deploying the driver curtain airbag in an offset collision has its benefits, but it's probably best it's left undeployed in case of a side impact after the front impact, like ford2219 said. Deploying the passenger curtain airbag has NO benefits whatsoever and should never be deployed in a front impact.

  • @superoctobe its pretty much the same thing...

  • @ford2219 Have you seen the new Chevy Cruze? All deploy during a frontal crash. along with the front and knee airbags. Not all cars are going to hit 40% off center so they should deploy.

  • @corvetteboy10 That is a mistake, is like if you desing the wheels to work as the doors, it dosent make sense all the systems in a car have a unique porpuse and the Side Airbags are desing to deploy in side crashes, not in front ones.

  • @ford2219 I know for a fact that some Auto Makers design the Side Curtain Airbags to deploy in a frontal crash. And I would like for my car (If equipped) to deploy the Side Curtain Airbags in a frontal crash.

  • @Annihilator1111 ...... And?
