Almost three weeks later we take another look at the very active Dolichovespula maculata nest in the crab apple tree out back of my parents' house near Stoughton. It has grown considerably and is probably at or near peak population. It is a hot late summer day and some of the workers are engaged in the wing-fanning behavior to increase airflow through the nest.
Some of the larger hornets that fly in and out are probably males and/or future queens, but there are still many workers and they are still busily enlarging the nest.
