To knit a beanie, use a 16-inch needle to begin the bottom of the hat, measure the person's head to determine how many stitches to cast on, determine which decorative stitches will be sued and decrease the stitches incrementally to taper up to the top. Learn the basic steps of knitting a beanie with a demonstration from an advanced knitter in this free video on knitting.

  • how serendipitous i was passing by Imagiknit while working on my hat .. since you were close for holiday i went and sat at the samovar and kept working :P almost done

  • Hi,i've got 128 stitches for the hat im making.after decreasing,it leaves me 16 stitches,do i pull the yarn through all of them to close up the top of the hat?

  • I've been looking and this is a GREAT description of decreasing! Thanks.

  • I could use this video. When you know how to knit, but not know how to make a beanie, then this is a good video to watch. I would recommend seeing videos on how to knit BEFORE seeing this video.

  • i found this really helpful! :)

  • Anyone know how to keep the stitches from twisting on the circular needle also what will it start doing if you have twisted your stitches over the top and ruined it???? THX

  • Very useful. Exactly what I needed. If I wanted a single stitch then I'd need a demonstration but I really needed an over view. I just needed how to make a beanie without an actual pattern meaning I can make my own pattern. This isn't supposed to be a video of start to finish knit a beanie with me. There are enough of those on here. This was perfectly concise and clear and didn't require a long lesson for me to get the information I needed.

  • That was very helpful to know. I just started learning the knit and purl and now know what I need to make the beanie. The decrease method is similar to the crochet decrease. Very interesting and helpful.

  • Ahaha "and that's the worst thing you could ever do. Because that'd never be a hat."
