@DEP717 That's because Thomas Harris, who wrote the novel Red Dragon, did extensive research into the FBI's division that handles serial killers. This was a masterpiece film that, if Mann had actually followed the novel to its conclusion, would've been one of the best movies ever made. Instead he went for the cheap outcome with a very bad Miami Vice-type ending that had nothing to do with the novel. An unforgiveable sin in my book.

@Maloperverso Yep, word is William Petersen was partly inspired by this role to push for a series about crime investigators. This movie is one of the best "investigation" movies ever made and I recommend it highly to all would-be Police or CSI students. In looking at evidence and psychology this movie is the real deal where many others pretend.

And this movie isn't about hannibal lecter, it's about francis dollarhyde and tom noonan is better in this than ralph fiennes is in red dragon.

Michael Mann shows us with "Manhunter" true to life Psychopathic subject matter to the highest order instead of drowning the audience in a layer of Hollywood esque garbage that we saw with Red Dragon.
