"It was the Rosa Parks moment," says one man. June 28, 1969: NYC police raid a Greenwich Village Mafia-run gay bar, The Stonewall Inn. For the first time, patrons refuse to be led into paddy wagons, setting off a 3-day riot that launches the Gay Rights Movement. Told by Stonewall patrons, Village Voice reporters and the cop who led the raid, Stonewall Uprising compellingly recalls the bad old days when psychoanalysts equated homosexuality with mental illness and advised aversion therapy, and even lobotomies; public service announcements warned youngsters against predatory homosexuals; and police entrapment was rampant.

A treasure-trove of archival footage gives life to this all-too-recent reality, a time when Mike Wallace announced on a 1966 CBS Reports: "The average homosexual, if there be such, is promiscuous. He is not interested in, nor capable of, a lasting relationship like that of a heterosexual marriage." At the height of this oppression, the cops raid Stonewall, triggering nights of pandemonium with tear gas, billy clubs and a small army of tactical police. The rest is history.

  • This is terrific -- even just the trailer. I look forward to seeing the movie.

We have gained such a level of acceptance in the last 40 years that it is sometimes hard to remember just how bad things were. I want young people, gay and straight to see this and get an idea of what it was like, and how we worked and fought to change it.

  • As a straight Ally I say long live homosexual rights. Love should never be stripped from any two people.

  • Does anybody know who it is that's holding the speech in the beginning of the trailer?

  • It makes me sick to think that all that happens now is z-list celebrity endorsed adverts about trivial bullshit like saying 'that's so gay...' People really had some guts way back when...

  • This POS at the top of the video. I honestly hope he died a horrible death. People that full of evil are monsters and it's no moral failing to want the death of a monster. The number of lives he ruined, gay kids who committed suicide because of him and people like him, are an indictment against him.

  • NY passed the same-sex marriage bill today. We owe so much to these brave brothers and sisters who stood up for their rights 42 years ago. Stonewall warriors...we will never forget!!

  • I was shocked, horrified and disgusted by how gay people were treated (mental institutions?!?). How far have we come since then but how much more there is to do (UAFA). To think that America started this gay rights movement (even Gay Pride, I had no idea!) and has now reached a seemingly glass ceiling. I recommend this documentary to everyone despite sexual orientation!

  • Wonderful film. Just saw this on Amazon.com. What a time in American history. How far we've come and how far still we have to go.

  • We owe a huge debt of gratitude to all of the brave souls who stood up against the NYPD at Stone Wall and effectively launched Gay Pride and the LGBTQ EQuality movement here and around the World.!.

  • @theshaggyshow Coward's closed his account.

  • 200th like!! yaya
