Davis had a routine operation on his throat in 1956. He ordered not to raise his voice for at least a fortnight whilst his throat healed. A few days after the operation he got into a shouting match with a promoter/producer and screwed his vocal chords up. Hence his 'whisper'...

Overkill, in every way possible. I'm just going to pretend that the 80's version of Miles Davis never existed.

Nice reply. Also it makes you appreciate how superficial and egotistic interviewers are. This guy doesn't understand Miles or really care about him; he's there to look good hosting a show. "Sometimes I think about my work 24 hours before it's even happened..." I'm sorry you've got 5 minutes to interview Miles Davis and you're talking about yourself?

He had a ton of pressure from record studios to make his music more pop oriented with, for example, little or no chord changes this was in order to appeal to a wider audience. That may be what you are hearing. I can not understand why your getting so many negative votes as this was basically the view Bill Evans had as well about Miles Davis so your not out of left field at all.
