Carbon offset: Music to green ears

Jul. 6 - World citizens inspired by the Live Earth series of global environmental concerts may want to consider carbon offsets as a way to reduce their ecological imprint. The practice of carbon offsetting measures one's output of carbon, which is believed to cause global warming, and then pays for projects elsewhere that produce a comparable amount of renewable energy, resulting in one becoming "carbon neutral."

Most techno-fix offset schemes are based in the developing world. Even if every poor nation on the planet went carbon-free today,

industrialised nations would still have to slash emissions if we are to have any

hope of preventing catastrophic climate change. Emissions from developing

nations are not the main problem.
