@shinberg The reason you think these vocals are "bad" is probably because you are SO young, that you can't remember a time when popular music hadn't become the flat, soul-less, auto-tuned American-Idol style overproduced CRAP that is spoonfed (or shoved down the throat of) to the Masses by the dinosaur record companies. I feel sorry for you. "Perfection is stagnation."

Wow. I realize the singer wasn't 100% perfectly in tune, but that's actually what I like about it. They put their own little bit into this awesome song and made it their own. No slick polish. Just raw. Love it.

Lol, Ben Kweller doesn't know what to do with his hands without a guitar in them.
Solution: air guitar.

@pigreenk07 i totally agree. i never bother commenting on youtube for that reason. shitheads ruin it for everyone. i LOVE this song, by the way. it's done perfectly.

@NoekieB Rufus and Patrick have good voices (not great IMHO).. but Adam Green and Colin Meloy are pretty much exactly what I mean. If you heard them with a guitar busking and you didn't know them you'd go.. "meh". I mean .. there used to be Dylans, Johnny Cashs and Lou Reeds too (ie not great singers) but there was *also* Freddy Mercury, Hall and Oates, George Michaels, Jeff Buckley, Morrissey, Duran Duran, y'know? .. and feeling? C'mon.. Adam Green is more emotionless than T-Pain.

@getkristan I have to disagree. Ben Folds has a fantastic singing voice imo and there are many others in alternative music who do too. Rufus Wainwright, Adam Green, Colin Meloy, Patrick Watson, Fleet Foxes...there are plenty. The 'unstable' voice thing is just probably more common in indie/alt music, as it's more about conveying a feeling than striving for technical perfection. Just the thing many pop-singers are lacking these days: Feeling!

@LeshaAnn .. and now I just read your comment .. Well, I *am* old enough to remember a time when being a singer meant not singing like you just woke up. Y'know, working on range and control and stuff because it was your *instrument*. Just like if everybody played guitar like Bob Dylan.. ok.. *maybe* there's honest soul behind it, but theres nothing wrong with trying to get skillz. You dont dis Adele, right? Great voice with great technique. Show me a guy who compares nowadays. Not allowed.

You know what I miss? Really good guy singers. I mean, there is nothing wrong with these "sofa voices", but thats all there is any more! The nineties made it not cool to "try". So now everybody does this.. and it's a bit boring. Where is a "Sting"? Or a "Billy Joel"? Or even "A-Ha"? Good guy singers are relegated to R+B, or pop-idol stuff, or metal maybe. But "alt" seems to mean "no trying to sing well" for guys (but girls are allowed). Meh.

What about Ben Dover?

I wish there was a separate comment section for arguments. I can't even say how much I enjoyed this without feeling like my comment will just get lost in all the mesh.

@jenoeno6 Of course... You're making my argument for me! Bob Dylan is from a time when heart mattered more than image, perfectly auto-tuned. Early Dylan is absolutely amazing.
how have i never heard this, did they realese more than the 3 or 4 songs from the EP?

Yes, they recorded this one too for "Wig in a box", an album featuring some artists covering songs from the musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch"
