@sharkblubber the problem is, you guys calculate Borneo forest lost by graph extrapolations, formulas, etc. you forgot that we too have our own land use policy, forest reserve policy in place. the industry (if you really know aboutit) is highly regulated. malaysian government is one of the most environmental concern and has pledges many times that it will keep the environment. but we have ligitimate land for agricultural too. as long as the quota is there, we can deforest it for economic gains.

You lose 1.91% of your forest per annum so by using the exponential loss factor you will have only half your forest left in 36 years, the same level as Europe "currently". However Europe's tree cover is increasing so within 20 years indonesia will have less cover than europe. Don't make the mistakes that europe made in the past, protect your forest and its ecosystem services or you have to pay to replace them.

You need to read the millenium ecosystem assessment, the loss of ecosystem services in Borneo is crazy. Plantations need fertilisers, pesticides and herbicides all derived from crude oil, a finite resource. Malaysia should start thinking of its long term future, not just tomorrow. From the MEA:"human actions are depleting Earths natural capital, putting such strain on the environment that the ability of the planets ecosystems to sustain future generations can no longer be taken for granted"

@sharkblubber the truth is, everybody deforest. with palm now being one of Malaysia's main income, that doesn't mean that it will be greedier. with all eyes watching, plus a very good land use policy in place, I believe it wouldnt came up to extinction of species in Borneo. plus, the plantation itself absorbs as much carbon, releases oxygens, high yielding - feed more people, less land burden, more profit per hectare which will do really great for people and planet.

@sharkblubber why deforest? why does the UK has only 17% forest still under cover? why do most of the countries around the world deforest? economic gains. land, is a country's source of income and just because it happened to have lots of forests, it doesn't mean that a country (like Malaysia) couldnt use it for development / agricultural / business purposes. however, we still have more than 50% land under forests cover which we have pledge to keep during the Earth Summit in Rio.

@winmac80 Why deforest in the first place, the value of an intact forest is vastly greater than the temporary benefits of short term profits. Think long term, not greed.

@winmac80 No, i'm saying keep te forest for its value to Malaysia i.e. genetic diversity of the forest, ecosystem services and tourism, not to mention cultural heritage of the forests. Poverty comes from greed and population growth. The money from timber would last one generation, what about your children? The industrial crowded wasteland that is most of europe is not a nice place to live.

instead why not pressure them to reforests? sure it takes time, be it 100 or a thousand years. but to ask developing countries to not forest at all and hold them from developing their lands doesnt sound right. dont you think?

So what you're saying is keep the forest for the Europeans? let them sit happily and enjoy their richest while we suffer in poverty just to keep the forest intact? they have harvested their forest, and get rich with it - not to mention other countries' resources. now you want us to keep the oxygen free flowing and absorb carbon by their wasteful lifestyle?
