  • Goddamn, that long pause was intense. Something not often found in newer films is this kind of pacing. I feel that with the angles picked from shot to shot that even cerebral scenes or casual conversations move too quickly.

But here, the shot shows the two of them, just staring. Even when the action finally happens, it contrasts so well with the moments prior that it seems like a blur. Just amazing.

  • @RossIrving i AGREE!!

  • @Ibringthetruth1 The actor was wearing a mechanism under his kimono that was meant to only spray a little each time, so they could do multiple takes, refilling it and shutting it off, etc. Unfortunately, one of the gasket caps blew during this take and ruined the mechanism, also causing it to empty the entire bag at once. If you watch, notice it expels with enough force the actor has trouble staying standing. What you're watching is the first and last take.

Good comment. Back then they were all just finally starting to leave "silent movies" behind them, but they all still kept the "style" and the capacity to express most of what was happening without words...

  • This is fucking awesome. Thanks for the upload! Time to go watch Yojimbo and Sanjuro.

  • This is not the"slaughter" !!! It's a duel !!!

  • love the bird sound

  • @jumpmonkey03 Is that what it was? Cause i bursted out laughing at the unrealistic amount of blood-spray haha

  • One of the all-time best scenes: long, intense stare-down, followed by a blindingly-fast sword slash. Kurosawa truly was the Great Father of Screen Violence.

  • Great how Mifune is nearly breathless after the kill......shows the effort and concentration.
