Dune is such a complex story, what about the empire after paul, the worm god leto, there is enough for a lengthy tv series, maybe in the same style as galactica, I found the appendix of the book as interesting as the story, the fremen as an oppressed race, Liet/ Kynes, Agamemnon and his titans, the swordmasters in the jihad...there is a lot of detail...as much as tolkien if not more...huge project..I would definitley watch.
Also, a short "intro scene" should accompany the start of the film, just like in the Fellowship of the Ring. It succinctly and very awesomely gave the backstory on Sauron and the Ring of Power without getting bogged down or becoming confusing. A similar set of scenes could be done in Dune, with some narrator (Irulan?) detailing how man revolted against thinking machines (showing battle scenes) and the start of the Guild, Imperium, and Bene Gesserit.
Yeah, I know what you are talking about, but what I am envisioning is definitely something akin to the intro of The Fellowship of the Ring movie, i.e. actual filmed scenes of the past Butlerian Jihad, foundation of the Imperium, and the start of the feud between House Atredies and House Harkonnen. In comparison, those stills for the Alan Smithee version can only be....bleh.
This movie is great, but I did see it right BEFORE I read the book, so I can be fair and see its shortcomings, as well as agree a remake of the film is totally possible and a GREAT idea. A Peter Jackson LOTR-style treatment must be used, even though this is one book. I'd recommend splitting the book into two movies in order to do it right (like Jackson's Hobbit). This also works as the novel itself is split into three "books".

I like the speech by Princess Irulan though, I think its in the character of the book.
I'd like to see another attempt at a proper cut for the film. I really like the actors and atmosphere made for this film.
But I believe David Lynch has no interest in it whatsoever.
