Votes are being counted in a tightly contested presidential election race between incumbent Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former UN diplomat Winston Tubman and 14 other candidates. VOA's Ndimyake Mwakalyelye talks to James Butty, managing editor and co-host of Voice of America radio program "Daybreak Africa," about Tuesday's successful elections and if there could be a run-off vote.

  • thanks,.,.i met liberan guys who turned out to be crooks and i felt sorry for them,.

  • @suirvale I'll go more in detail at a later time.

  • yeh but no one is telling me why they wanted c taylor in power,..what did the usa liberians gain from warm what was so bad about the american-liberian that theyso much bloodshed was spilled,.,.i presume u have lots or rich liberians in the usa,.,.

  • Today, Liberia is free and rebuilding. The same very people who helpt destroyed our country are the onse trying to win the hearts and favor of the Liberian people. But, all those who cause us pain and lost of innocent Liberian lives will face the judgement of God one way or the other. God does not sleep and no evil deeds go unponished.

  • @suirvale Charlse Taylor was sent by both the US and Americo Liberians to destroyed Liberia. They helpt him break from US prison and financialy supported his invassion. Other African countries also played a role in destroying Liberia. For example: Libya provided training and finance, Guinea and Ivory Coast granted him access to their territorial routs because we share borders, Bukina faso provided troops and extra training. The civil war lasted 14yrs and eliminated 9% of our population.

  • @suirvale it was a number of things...mainly the indigenous Liberians being tired of domination of politics and wealth by the Americo-Liberians (the descendants of the freed-slaves who settled in Liberia), and of course greed and other factors too.....

  • i always wonder was charles taylor totally responsible for the wars in liberia,,,can someone enlighten me,.
