Even if nothing happens in 2012, because of the huge hype about it, the NWO can use this date as an excuse to release a huge catastrophe, like a bomb or some viral weapon into the world, to reduce the population (part of their agenda) and people will just think oh it was meant to happen. So in this respect, by prophesizing an end date, the Maya could have actually created an end date, but would this make the prophecy any less true? Or can they be held responsible?
