Nice -- it is interesting how differently the mechanism of the internet has been considered from previous community mechanisms like social halls, churches, fire halls, party lines, pen pals etc. I too see the mechanism as no reason to divide the cultural types -- ie online vs offline, Virtual vs. "Real"
Humm -- little did I know my great grandmother, using her party line was actually part of a virtual community ;-)

I agree with you on all points, except for the one where there need be no separation between online and offline. I guess it depends on how you use the internet. I have many friends offline, I have many friends online, people I only talk to via online communication and I guess the only place (except email and chat) where these groups come together is Facebook because it has become a mainstream site, whereas video bloggers are still questioned: why do you film yourself & put it on youtube?

What I meant was that community is community and it doesn't really matter if that community exists online or offline because I don't think there's a difference.
I'm a chatty girl - I like video. :)
